East Africa Tentative Itinerary
Day 1
- Depart from the USA for Europe and connecting flights to Africa, arriving in Europe on Monday morning
Day 2
- Flights from Europe to Nairobi
- Arrive Nairobi in the evening
- Overnight at Serena Hotel, a quiet oasis in the heart of a large and tumultuous African City
- Dinner on your own in the garden or bar, or time to rest from the long trip
Day 3
- Morning flight to Samburu in Northern Kenya, where we will see species, such as zebra, antelope, and giraffes, that are unique to this area
- Our guides and drivers will meet us at the airstrip to take us on our first game drive en route to our camp.
- Check in to Ashnil Samburu Camp, a luxury tent camp located on the Samburu River
Day 4
- Morning and afternoon game drives in Samburu, with time to rest after lunch in your spacious and comfortable tent
- In Samburu, we spent 45 minutes with a leopard at close range and watched a cheetah with her two cubs in an unsuccessful chase for an antelope
- Overnight at Ashnil Samburu Camp
Day 5
- Morning direct flight to Masai Mara
- Meet driver/guides at airstrip and begin game drive through this spectacular national park, teeming with animals, including the huge migration of wildebeest and zebras that circle throughout this part of Africa in search of grass
- Overnight at Kichwa Tembo or Ashnil Mara Camp, in the heart of the park, where we saw many cats and, twice, a black rhino with her baby
Day 6
- Optional (and not included in the trip cost, but wonderful) early morning balloon flight over the vast savannah, seeing elephant, antelope, big cats, water buffalo and much more as we hover peacefully over the herds and their predators
- All day game drive in Masai Mara with picnic lunch and a chance, we hope, to see the huge and rare black rhino. In this part of the park, we have seen the "big five" animals as well as lions, thousands of antelope, wildebeest, hippos and warthogs
- Overnight at Kichwa Tembo Camp
Day 7
- All day game drive in the Mara Triangle, where we have seen black rhinos, leopards, giraffes, and many more rare and beautiful animals and birds. The Golden Triangle is the most famous area in Masai Mara for spotting the "big five" animals
- Overnight at Kichwa Tembo Camp
Day 8
- Full day drive to the Kenya/Tanzania border where we will meet our Tanzanian driver/guides before continuing on through the vast Serengeti, justifiably famous for its enormous number and variety of animals. Overnight at Kirawira Camp, the most opulent of the tented camps in the Serengeti, including an excellent chef
Day 9
- Morning and afternoon game drives in the Serengeti, with time to rest after lunch in our comfortable tents. Near Kirawira, we have seen as many as 14 lions in one pride
- Overnight at Kirawira Camp
Day 10
- Drive to the Balila Lodge in a different part of the park, seeing cats, elephants, wildebeest, zebra and countless other birds and animals along the way.
- Overnight at the Balila Lodge, with its beautiful views over the plain below. Here you can often see the fabled migrations of wildebeest and zebras, sometimes seeing tens of thousands of animals from the lodge's terrace.
Day 11
- All day game drive in Serengeti including Seronera area, where we are likely to see leopards and cheetahs. This is the "big cat" area of the Serengeti, where we have always seen these remarkable cats.
- Overnight at Balila Lodge
Day 12
- Drive to the fabulous Ngorongoro Crater, about 30 miles in diameter with the highest concentration of large mammals on earth.
- Optional stop at the Olduvai Gorge along the way
- Check in to the Serena Lodge, spread out along the crater rime with gorgeous views of the Crater far below.
Day 13
- All day game drive in Ngorongoro Crater, beginning with a steep descent down a jeep road into the crater floor, and enjoying 360 degree views across the crater. In the bottom of the Crater, we are likely to see many lions (on our last visit, we counted 32), cheetahs, gazelles, flamingoes and, if we're lucky, the reclusive black rhino.
- Overnight at Serena Lodge.
Day 14
- Morning drive to Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airport for our flight to Nairobi.
- Afternoon visit, if time permits, to the Giraffe Reserve and Karen Blixen House, the home of Isak Dineson (Karen Blixen's pen name), author of Out of Africa.
- Dinner at The Carnivore Restaurant before transferring to the airport for our late evening flights from Nairobi to Europe
Day 15
- Arrive in Europe in the morning and connect flight to the USA, arriving home the same day
- END OF SERVICES
